“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” — 2 Corinthians 4:7
“In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay… therefore if anyone cleanses himself… he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified and useful for the Master.” — 2 Timothy 2:20–21
In many African cultures, the calabash is more than a container—it is a vessel of life, service, and honour. From the carrying of water to the serving of meals, from storage of wine to the moulding of sustenance, the calabash has long been treasured as a companion of daily living. Though they appear in different shapes and sizes, each calabash shares the same humble origin: the pumpkin. From one source come many forms, each shaped for a unique purpose.
This painting, “Vessels of Honour,” reflects on the sacred symbolism of the calabash as a mirror of humanity. Like these vessels, we as human beings are formed from one divine origin—created by God. We differ in size, function, calling, gifts, and capacity, yet our value is revealed in service. Honour is not found in mere appearance but in usefulness and impact. A vessel becomes honoured when it carries, preserves, and pours out life to others.
Calabashes are naturally fragile. Alone, they are vulnerable to cracks and destruction. Yet when placed together, they strengthen and protect one another—wedging in unity, preserving their purpose. In the same way, humanity thrives in unity. We are called to stand together, support one another, and serve collectively so that our individual fragility does not lead to collective destruction. True honour emerges not from isolation, but from shared purpose and community.
“Vessels of Honour” is therefore both cultural and spiritual: a celebration of identity, purpose, and unity. It reminds us that though we are earthen and fragile, we carry divine treasure within. Our calling is to serve, to uplift, and to remain united—so that together we may fulfil the purpose for which we were created.
